Admissions Requirements

Physical Examination and Immunization Requirements

Each student admitted to the Doctor of Pharmacy program is required to have a physical examination at his/her own expense.  The results of the physical examination must be signed by a licensed physician and placed on file in the Charles R. Drew Student Health Center, no later than 30 days prior to matriculation. Please print and complete the UMES SOP Health and Immunization History Form located in the SOP Admissions section.

 The following immunizations are required for Doctor of Pharmacy students:

  • Tetanus (within last 10 years)
  • Hepatitis B Series
  • Varicella (chickenpox) [if no history of having the disease]
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella)----- 2 doses
  • PPD (Tuberculosis skin test)--------------- within the previous 6 months
  • Meningitis Vaccine or waiver---------------(on campus student)

 

Health Insurance Requirement

All students admitted to the program are required to have health insurance.  The University will provide limited health insurance to students.  Please visit the Charles Drew Student Health Center Website for information regarding the health insurance provided  http://www.umes.edu/studenthealth/Default.aspx?id=2222 and fees.

Criminal Background Check Requirement

All students are required to have a criminal background check (CBC) report on file in the School of Pharmacy Office of Student Affairs and Office of Experiential Education. The criminal background check is performed by Certified Background, Inc, at the expense of the student.  Please note the following:

  • The Criminal Background Check is MANDATORY.
  • Information from the CBC must be on file with the Offices of Student Affairs and Experiential Education, in the School of Pharmacy before the student secures a seat in the class.
  • Additional background checks may be required of external institutional partnerships prior to participation in experiential activities.  Financial and other responsibilities for these CBCs are the sole responsibility of the student.
  • Information on obtaining the initial CBC is mailed to each student who has accepted an offer of admission with the School of Pharmacy for the incoming class.

PCAT

The Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) may be taken at any time, but no later than January of the year that you are seeking admission.  Please contact the Psychological Corporation at 1-800-622-3231 or visit their website www.pcatweb.info for a PCAT application and additional PCAT information.

TOEFL Requirement

For ALL students born outside the United States, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required.  Please refer to the following website for information on the TOEFL and test dates www.ets.org/toefl/.  The test needs to be completed no later than the application deadline (February 1).

GPA

The minimum GPA for admission is 2.75.  This GPA is calculated based on the pre-requisite coursework requirements listed below.

Pre-pharmacy requirements may be taken at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore or any accredited institution in the United States. The requisite course work necessary to qualify a prospective student for admission consideration is as follows:

CURRENT NEWS

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore launched its newest doctoral studies program in August with the arrival of the inaugural class of pharmacy students.

Earning a spot in the first class was competitive. UMES received 931 applications and interviewed 150 prospective students for just 60 seats.

A week of orientation culminated with a “white (lab) coat” ceremony the day before classes formally started on Aug. 16.
